El Chalten
February 4-6, 2003

El Chalten is the base for exploring the magnificent Fitz Roy range - a beacon for backpackers and serious mountain climbers from all over the world.

This ranger post is the starting point for every visit to the area. The rangers here are very serious about keeping the park preserved and in good condition.

All the scenery in the area is fabulous. Here's the road out of town - I hitch hiked a ride a few miles out of town to the trailhead.

The wilderness landscape opens out in every direction. It's hard to do it justice in a photo.

Another view of Lago Los Tres with Mt. Fitz Roy in the background. These difficult granite spires were first climbed in the 50's.

These were the people who gave me a ride earlier - I ran into them on the trail.

This friendly Austrian mountain climber and his friend had been waiting for three weeks for good weather allowing them to scale "Cerro Torre" - a rare occurrence as it can only be seen once or twice a month. Until then, they were surviving on a large crate of whisky, cigarettes and spaghetti.

Here's the little town of El Chalten that has sprung up in the last few years to serve the backpackers and mountain climbers visiting the area.

Nice to be back at the trailhead. Maybe I'll get me some pizza and beer!
