Torres del Paine
February 8-12, 2003

Just over the border in Chile is the Torres del Paine National Park - one of the world's great wilderness treasures. The name mean "Towers of Paine" - Paine is apparently the person who discovered them.

Here's the harbor at Puerto Natales, the gateway city to the park. Puerto Natales is a forlorn, windswept town where most of the buildings are made of painted corrugated metal. This is the only picture I took.

At the park entrance - not a bad view of the Torres.

The Torres del Paine up close - it's a hard, hard hike up to this viewpoint with gusts of wind up to 90mph (must have been). At one point, holding onto a shrub, I watched rocks the size of grapes blowing down the path.

An assortment of tourists viewing the Torres. Nationalities I met include Chileans, Israelis, Germans, French, Americans, Japanese, Spanish and more.

Here I am cooking a meal of sausages and mashed potatoes in a little shelter at the campground.

And here's a picture of the shelter.

Another fine night's accommodation. My bivvy sack kept me quite dry and cozy at all times.

I love the surreal colors in this shot.

This formation is known as the "cuernos" or "horns" of Paine.

This is the "Grey" glacier. Pretty cool, although if you ask me, if you've seen one glacier, you've seen them all.

There were some pretty cool looking icebergs floating around in the lake.

I camped for the night on the lakeshore - you can see icebergs from the beach.

A couple of Israelis and a Japanese I hiked with for a while.

Major landslides are frequent, and often picturesque.

A view from the other side of the Cuernos. Strong gusts of wind pull sprays of water up dozens of feet off this lake's surfaces.

My Chilean friends came to see me off on the catamaran that marked the last stage of my five days in the park.
